The term "space" may refer to the distance between shapes or objects.
Two-Dimensional (2D) Space
Within the Visual Arts, 2D space is primarily limited to height and width. The placement of an object on the paper, elevation or the overlapping of shapes, creates the the illusion of space on a flat surface.
There are different types of drawing techniques used to create space, including linear perspective, atmospheric perspective, or magnified perspective.
Three-Dimensional (3D) Space
3D space is recognized as having the characteristics of height, width, and depth. It is the distance or area around each object, between, above, below, or in real places. In the Visual Arts, it ususally refers to sculpture.
